This paper discusses the relationship between the breakdown of marriage and family and the rise in child abuse cases over the last several decades. It argues that marriage provides a safer environment for children than do single-parent and cohabiting homes, where the risk of child abuse is significantly higher. This paper also addresses the effects of family income and structure on domestic violence situations as well as the impact of abuse on children.
