This paper discusses the rising rate of divorce in the Western World and the subsequent increase in economically disadvantaged, female-headed homes.  It reviews economic research relating to the financial consequences of divorce for fathers, mothers, and children.  In particular, it examines the role institutions play as they determine post-divorce child support payments, child custody arrangements, and visitation rights.
