This article examines divorce trends in Japan during the twentieth century.  It finds a significant increase in the rate of divorce and estimates that approximately one third of all marriages in Japan will end in divorce.  Furthermore, it highlights educational differentials in divorce risk as it finds that individuals with low levels of education experience a greater risk of martial dissolution compared to their more educated counterparts.
