This paper suggests that marriage and the family remain economically beneficial institutions for many people, thus their demise is not likely to occur in the near future.  It argues that, although the expanding role of the government may have served to undermine the economic value of these institutions to some extent, it has not done so completely, as evidenced by the greatly elevated rates of poverty and hardship among single-parent families.
