This paper discusses the findings of a 1999 international poll which reported that, overall, the world's population values marriage, children and the family. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed said that society should be built around the traditional family structure with marriage consisting of a union between a man and a woman. This paper also discusses the state of the family in New Zealand, including rates of marriage and divorce.
