This paper examines divorce trends in developed countries and seeks to determine whether or not there are socio-demographic characteristics that elevate an individual's risk of divorce. Socio-demographic factors found to increase divorce risk include early marriage, premarital cohabitation, premarital birth or conception, previous cohabitation or partnership dissolution, parental divorce, and poor economic standing. The authors pay particular attention to the ways in which higher rates of cohabitation are contributing to higher rates of family disruption.
