This study found that youth who had carried a handgun at least once in 1999 had poorer academic performance and were more likely to use drugs and alcohol than those who did not carry a gun.  It also found that 4% of all youths aged 12 to 17 had carried a gun in the past year; the overwhelming majority of them were male.
