This paper examines substance use rates in Australia, the health of drug and alcohol users, and the health behaviours and incidences of crime and violence related to substance abuse. It also discusses patterns of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drug consumption and the healthcare costs, personal expenditures, and government revenues from such substances. Lastly, it summarizes public perceptions of the drug problem and measures for reducing alcohol and drug consumption.
