This paper reviews data relating to the prevalence of sexual assault in rural America, and discusses characteristics of rural communities that discourage women from reporting incidents of assault. It also highlights the difficulties faced by facilities and individuals who attempt to help rural victims of sexual assault and makes recommendations for improving services in rural areas.
