This paper discusses the unique issues faced by families in which a parent is incarcerated.  It addresses problems faced by these families and the options they have for addressing these problems, as well as the importance of continued family contact during incarceration for offenders' readjustment to family and social life after release.  It also examines the ways in which existing policies and practices are a hindrance or help to the maintenance of families.
