This paper reviews existing literature on the living arrangements and well-being of children with incarcerated parents, the risk factors that they face, and the relationship between the risk factors and specific living arrangements. It discusses problems that children with incarcerated parents often experience, such as parental substance abuse and domestic violence, and argues that these risk factors help to explain why an increasing number of children with an imprisoned parent are placed in foster and kinship care.
