This report provides information on the demographic characteristics, types of offenses and average sentence duration of youths under the age of 18 in state prisons.  It demonstrates that the number of youths admitted to state prisons doubled from 1985 to 1997 and that rates of violent offending among youths increased.  However, youths under the age of 18 continue to make up less than 1% of the state prison population.
