This study of men and women accused of killing their spouses looked at the way in which prosecutors, judges, and juries dealt with these cases differently according to gender.  It found that female defendents were less likely than males to be prosecuted or to be convicted if brought to trial.  If convicted, their average prison term was also much shorter than that of male convicts.
