This study examines personal and family background factors that affect an individual's risk of either experiencing or committing acts of domestic violence in adulthood.  Factors include witnessing domestic violence as a child, experiencing childhood maltreatment, and having a behavioural or substance abuse disorder. The authors argue that an awareness of the effects of these factors is important in developing prevention initiatives.
