This paper examines the issue of child abuse and neglect in indigenous Australian communities, and focuses on the historical factors that affect present-day rates of maltreatment. It discusses such issues as socio-economic disadvantage, mental health, the effects of welfare, and substance abuse, particularly alcohol consumption.
