This study of childbearing in stepfamilies examines future fertility and the effects of partners having shared children or children from previous unions.  It finds that having a shared child most strongly reduces the likelihood of future childbearing, followed by having a resident stepchild from the woman's prior union.  Non-resident stepchildren and resident stepchildren from the man's prior union have less of a deterring effect on fertility.  The authors also discuss some differences between Finland and Austria.
