This analysis of demographic data demonstrates a preference for sons among parents in India. Although this preference is not evident at a national level, the authors show that smaller families have a significantly higher proportion of boys than do larger families, and that many couples, particularly those who are socially or economically disadvantaged, both desire and have a higher proportion of sons.
