This paper challenges the hypothesis that parents' gender preferences for children disappear in countries with high levels of gender equality.  It examines data from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, and finds a strong preference for one child of each sex among parents with two children.  Furthermore, it finds that Danish, Swedish and Norwegian parents have developed a preference for daughters, while Finnish parents express a preference for sons.
