This study uses the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) to create an “index of adversity” to enable researchers to identify children whose development is most at risk due to various stress factors in their lives.  Such factors are low income, parental alcohol abuse, caregiver depression, divorce, teenage pregnancy and learning disabilities in the child.  Resilience factors and differences between genders are also studied.
