This paper discusses the frequent need for nonparental care arrangements in South Africa and proposes a model to aid decision makers in selecting the most appropriate form of care for children in different situations. The model involves identifying the options for nonparental care, assessing the costs and outcomes of the different arrangements, and determining which options adequately meet the standards set.
