This report examines the differences between child deaths that occur as a result of child maltreatment and those that occur for other reasons.  It also discusses the methods used to determine cause of death and assesses the extent to which maltreatment is considered a possibility when investigating child fatalities.  It concludes that the current systems for attributing causes of death are inadequate and recommends improvement.
