This study finds that maternal age is a factor in lowbirthweight infancts only for the very youngest (under 15) and oldest (over 40)  mothers.  It suggests that overall low birthweights for children of teenage mothers aged 15 to 19 are the result of an economically disadvantaged background and are not a factor of the mother's age.
