This study is based on data collected through the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY), and focuses on the impact heavy alcohol consumption has on mothers and their children.  It finds that mothers who drink heavily tend to experience elevated rates of depression, have poor parenting skills, smoke, and have health problems.  Children in these families are more likely to exhibit separation anxiety, hyperactivity, aggression, conduct disorder, and delinquent behaviours.
