This report updates past data on the financial costs of children for two-parent and single-parent families in the United States in 1997.  To estimate the cost, it looks at expenditures for housing, food, transportation, clothing, health care, education, child care, and miscellaneous goods and services and finds that a single child from a two-parent household, cost between $8,060 and $9,170 in 1997.
