This paper examines differences in the earnings and career consequences of motherhood for women by skill level and timing of birth.  It finds that the costs are particularly high for highly skilled women, especially when births occur at a young age.  The authors suggest that the greater relative cost of childbearing for highly skilled women may account for the much greater tendency of these women to delay childbearing or to forego it altogether.
