This paper seeks to determine whether or not having children increases the stability of cohabiting couples' relationships.  It finds that, both for couples who continue to cohabit and for those who marry, conceiving a child while cohabiting increases stability.  Giving birth while cohabiting, however, was not associated with any gains in stability or permanence.
