This paper looks at the future outcomes of unwed mothers who remain unmarried after the birth of their child.  It finds that, compared to those who are married at or near the time of birth, unmarried mothers have fewer children over the life course, marry later, and are less likely to ever marry.  They also face disadvantage due to the absence of paternal investment in their children.
