This paper discusses trends in non-marital childbearing and unwed motherhood, and challenges public perceptions of the nature and causes of out-of-wedlock births, and the characteristics of unwed mothers. It also looks at the decline in teen pregnancy rates and the rise in the number of births to cohabiting couples.
