This paper provides evidence from American families that children born to unmarried mothers are significantly more likely to experience poverty than children born to married parents.  It also finds that this association persists even after controlling for maternal characteristics such as education, employment status, and living arrangements.  The author calls for a continued policy focus on the problem of unmarried childbearing.
