This document examines existing research on the relationship between child maltreatment, neglect, and juvenile delinquency. It finds that the two are closely associated but cautions that child abuse does not guarantee delinquent behaviour later in life. It also briefly examines other consequences of child maltreatment, including mental health problems, participation in other risk behaviours, and decreased cognitive functioning.
