This article examines the prevalence, causes, consequences, and nature of underage drinking in the United States. It finds that a significant proportion of adolescents have not only consumed alcohol, but have had enough to become drunk. The most commonly cited reasons for alcohol consumption were: to have a good time with friends, curiosity as to alcohol's taste and effects, and a desire to experience the "buzz" and "good feeling" caused by alcohol.
