This paper looks at workforce participation, income, and reliance on public assistance among former foster youth who exited foster care at the age of seventeen or older.  It finds that those who left care because of age or had been discharged to live independently had significantly higher incomes than those who had been reunited with their families, adopted, sent to live with relatives, placed in institutions, or run away.
